Dear Friends:

I wanted to take a moment to introduce you to Progressive Voters of America and to thank all those people who supported me in my successful 2006 race for the United States Senate.  Without your support, and the support of tens of thousands of other Americans, I would not be in the Senate today – fighting there as, perhaps, the most progressive member of that body.

In my view, if we are smart, we have the opportunity to make this coming election a transformational moment in America’s political history. This year, by electing Barack Obama and progressive members of the U.S. Senate and House, we can move our country in a radically different direction from where George W. Bush has taken us. That is why I am launching my Progressive Voters of America PAC and asking for your help. With your financial and political support we can help create the grass-roots movement that we need in order to reverse years of reactionary policies and, finally, make government begin working for all the people – and not just the wealthy and powerful special interests.  Please consider contributing to Progressive Voters of America today and working with us politically.

With your help in 2006 we were able to mount an historic campaign in Vermont that involved thousands of volunteers going door-to-door with a message of change. We proved that old-fashioned person-to-person campaigning can win, even when we were faced with an opponent who spent more money per vote than any Senate candidate in U.S. history. And win we did! Despite running against one of the wealthiest people in Vermont, we received over 65% of the vote.

Now, in 2008, we are engaged in a national campaign which will determine whether or not we continue the disastrous policies of George W. Bush, the worst president in modern American history.  It is my strong belief that, if we mobilize effectively, we can not only defeat John McCain and Republican candidates across the country, but we can lay the foundation for the implementation of a strong progressive agenda in 2009. And that is the effort that I want you to join me in as part of Progressive Voters of America.

As Vermont’s U.S. Senator and the only real Independent in Congress, I have introduced and supported legislation that would fundamentally change the direction of our country.  But, frankly, it doesn’t matter what I introduce or support unless we have the votes in Congress to pass these bills and a president who will sign them.

Here’s what I want to see happen in January 2009 with a new president and a new Congress:

  • End the disastrous war in Iraq and restore our moral position within the international community
  • Pass a national health care program guaranteeing health care for all
  • Rescind Bush’s tax breaks for millionaires and adequately fund the unmet needs of the middle class in terms of education and children’s needs, nutrition, rebuilding our infrastructure and job creation
  • Protect the constitutional rights that the Bush has attacked.
  • Reverse global warming and create millions of new jobs as we transform our energy system by moving away from foreign oil and fossil fuels and into energy efficiency and sustainable energy.

As the only real Independent in the U.S. Congress I intend to play a very active role in the upcoming election. While Senator Joe Lieberman will be trying to convince Independents to support John McCain, I will be fighting hard to elect Barack Obama and the most progressive Congress possible. I will do that by rallying grassroots support all across the country. But in order for us to succeed, I need you financial and political support.

Please contribute to my leadership PAC, Progressive Voters of America today. You can do this by clicking here or by mailing a check to Progressive Voters of America at 888 16th Street, NW, Suite 570 A, Washington, DC 20006.

Also, as we prepare my summer and fall schedule I would welcome hearing any suggestions you have as to how my presence could be effective in your region of the country both in terms of the Presidential race and the Senate and House races.

Once again, thank you very much for your support. Together we will create a new America!

                                                                                    Sincerely,

                                                                                    Senator Bernie Sanders
